Calendar of activities can be checked out at http://www.baguio.gov.ph/panagbenga2007/. Final sked still needs to be ironed out. My husband, Jonjon, our daughter CJ, and I will probably be there in Baguio for the National Scale-Modeling Contest at the Baguio Country Club on the last week of the festival. Jonjon is actually one of the members of the International Plastic Modelers’ Society of the Philippines (IPMS). But I guess we have to be there earlier so as not to miss the Parade of Floats.

Tentative Panagbenga 2007 programs out

PANAGBENGA 2007 will be launched on February 1 with a drum and lyre and street dancing parade along the main thoroughfares, together with other traditional activities and fresh ideas for the flower festival.

Local and foreign tourists are expected to flock to the city for the month-long festivities, all the more since the traffic number coding scheme for private vehicles has been suspended for the period and beyond.

Main activities include the market encounter tentatively set from February 3 to March 4, with landscaping exhibits, carpet of flowers, floral and related products, food outlets, cultural programs, fashion shows, musical presentations, flower related demonstrations, and lectures.

The proposed permanent Panagbenga Park is also slated for launching on February 23 at Upper Session Road. The park is for consistent winners for the past years in the flower festival landscape contests, to be permanently maintained as part of the city’s parks.

The most-awaited grand festival parade and street dancing as participated in by the different schools, local organizations, and visiting contingents from all over the country will be featured on February 24. A fireworks display will also be featured in the evening.

Following the grand parade is the float and marching band competitions on February 25.

“Session Road in Bloom,” another traditional event, is scheduled on February 26 to March 4, as Session Road will be closed to traffic to accommodate flower and flower product stalls. Sidewalk cafes and food outlets will be set up along the city’s main thoroughfare. Entertainers will also perform in selected areas of the road.

The closing ceremony is tentatively set on March 4 where ground demonstrations, exhibitions and awarding of winning entries will be done. A fireworks display will also be featured to cap the event.

Other activities tentatively booked for the 12th edition of the crowd-drawing event are musical drama variety show and amateur singing contest at the Baguio Convention Center (BCC), benefit concert for Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Baguio Athletic Bowl, floral fashion show at the skating rink at the Burnham Park, weddings made in heaven, Santacruzan at the Burnham Park, floral boat competition at the lake, search for Ms. And Mr. Fashionista 2007, and Campus Radio battle of the band.

Other flower-related activities are being planned by the managements of Camp John Hay (CJH), Baguio Country Club, Shoemart Baguio, and the Baguio Muslim Community for various activities in their respective venues.

A variety of food, decorations, and cultural presentations are also expected to abound during the period because local and foreign representatives will showcase their own products.

Major TV stations in the city have planned musical contests and concerts. The barangays have also organized their activities. Other activities would also be scheduled by interested entities.
